In this article, we’ll give you a detailed overview of all the photography and videography equipment we use to create content for various platforms: Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and this blog.
As you may already know, it’s Simon who handles most of the visual content (photos and videos) that you see on our social media.
When we first started in 2017, Simon bought a Canon 200D (which is no longer available, but the Canon 250D is a similar option), and he complemented it with the following lenses:
You can find all of this equipment (or equivalent options if no longer available) through our affiliate link on Digit-Photo (we explain everything about affiliate links in the last section of this article).
We also take photos and videos, especially for stories, with our smartphones. I, Léa, usually handle this.
Since 2019, during our European tour, I’ve been using a Huawei P30 Pro. I specifically chose this phone for its photography capabilities, which was my main criterion, and I’m really happy with it! However, I find it a bit limited when it comes to video quality.
In 2024, I switched to an iPhone 15 Pro. I hesitated for a long time between this and the latest Google Pixel (you can find a more detailed review in this Youtube video) but in the end, I chose the iPhone and I don’t regret it.
However, as technology is constantly evolving, it's difficult to recommend a specific phone in an article… We advise you to research the latest models before making your purchase.
Of course, there are several accessories in addition to the camera and phone:
First, a tripod. It's super useful for taking couple photos, still shots or animal photography. We have the Manfrotto MKELEB5BK-BH Tripod.
We also have an adapter to use the tripod with our smartphones.
Then, we have filters to put on the camera lenses to play with atmospheres and light:
All to be stored in the Shimoda filter case, to avoid using any other box.
Simon also bought a portable light: the ULANZI VL49 RGB PRO.
It is small and practical. He no longer uses it for his video shoots, but it can also be used to take portrait photos or other photos.
It has several intensities and several colors, which is quite practical.
Since Simon also really likes video and video editing, he bought microphones to improve sound recording.
It has a small microphone: the Sony Recorder ICD-TX650. It's flat and light, easy to carry everywhere and records with great sound quality.
He also recently bought himself the VideoMicro by Rode more recently, to shoot YouTube videos.
Yes, it's starting to be a lot, we agree, but in addition to everything we mentioned above, two additional products are also very useful:
Well now, with all this equipment, the question of transport arises.
At the beginning, in New Zealand and for our tour of Europe, we had a backpack Lowepro BP 300. It was super practical with its compartments.
In 2023, we decided to switch to Cullmann Bristol DayPack 600+, which is a bit more stylish than the previous one but just as practical.
We are partners with the site Digit-Photo.
It is a website that sells photo equipment. We order a lot of things through their site and they really have a wide selection. We have always been satisfied with the products received, which is why we wanted to partner with them.
If you also want to buy photo equipment, do not hesitate to check them out, they really have a variety of brands, equipment, accessories,... You are bound to find what you need!
And to explain our partnership a little more, in all transparency, the links we share with you here are affiliate links.
What this means for you: absolutely nothing. You pay the same price as if you went directly through the site and you are of course eligible for any discounts on the site.
For us, it allows us to receive a small commission on each sale, which helps us finance our photo equipment and trips to continue producing more and more content for you.
A big thank you to those who take the time to use these links
Please note that you can also enter our creator code: FOXTROTTEURS (without having to use the links), directly on the checkout page, when you buy your products. This will have the same effect as the link (which can sometimes be blocked by browsers or VPNs).
We hope this article has been useful to you.
Feel free to comment and share the equipment you use. We’re curious to hear your opinions and feedback on your gear, and it will be especially helpful for other travelers.
1. To start with photography, you don't need to have expensive equipment. Rest assured, you can take very nice photos even with a smartphone and a bit of creativity.
2. Don’t give up. The more you practice and take photos, the more you will improve. You will develop your own style, and your eye will adapt more quickly.
3. Don’t overlook post-production, whether for photos or videos. By post-production, we mean color correction using software (free or paid. We primarily use Lightroom, which is free on mobile devices or tablets, and paid on computers). This really helps to elevate your photos, as it’s where you can add the style and mood you want to your shots.
